Spring into Sicily: get the lowdown here on where to go and what to see

Villa Atena

Sicily in May promises long, sunny days and the first taste of fresh spring time flavours. Get the lowdown here on where to go and what to see.

This is the perfect time to visit Sicily’s nature reserves where you can hike, cycle and swim in fabulous crystal clear waters.  Each of the parks is incredibly diverse, ranging from large woodland areas in the Nebrodi to lush green spaces and natural pools at Cavagrande del Cassibile and the crocus and iris speckled cliff tops of the Zingaro Nature Reserve.

Gastronomic traditions in the Madonie

Renowned for its superb gastronomic heritage, the rural Madonie region is at its best in May and June when the mountains are carpeted with wild peonies, orchids and poppies. Explore well-trodden hiking routes and captivating medieval villages just a short drive from the lively towns and beaches of Sicily’s north coast.

Top tip for hikers in the Madonie is a well-deserved caffeine and sugar hit at the award-winning panettone-making Fiasconaro Bar in the main square at Castelbuono.

Villa Ai Mulini is in the heart of the Madonie, with poolside views over the forested mountains.

Ancient myths and archaeology

Often overlooked in favour of the island’s baroque south east, the north east corner of Sicily has its own special magic.  At the Greek-Roman Santuario di Tindari, attractions include Roman baths and mosaics, a Greek theatre and the Byzantine Black Madonna.  Add to that some striking views across the Aeolian Islands and a curious 1.5km tongue of sand resulting in a mini nature reserve around the Marinello lagoon.

Check out our newest collection of cottages, set amongst shady olive and oak trees, and with poolside views over the Santuario di Tindari.  Le Case di Tindari cottages sleep from two to 21.

Flower power takes to the streets

Flower power rules at the Infiorata di Noto (15-17 May).  Elsewhere, strawberry crops are celebrated in Syracuse, cannoli in the hills above Palermo and capers get their fair share of attention on the island of Salina.
