Road Trip Across Sicily. Let’s Rent a Car at the Palermo Airport and Embark on a Voyage to Discover the Trinacria

Visiting the Italian Island of Sicily with its historical heritage and innumerable attractions can be frustrating if you are planning a short vacation trip and are worried you might not able to see all the sights due to time constraints. Therefore, it is advisable to rent a car so you can make the most of your holiday by avoiding the tight schedule of guided bus tours or the less-reliable public transportation in the cities and towns, and experience instead an off-road adventure on your own time, including driving to less-visited locations which lay off the beaten track, away from the usual and often crowded tourist spots.

Logistics when planning your holiday are essential in order to find the right city from which to start your road trip. Fortunately, Sicily’s main airport in the capital, Palermo, is one of the best resources for car hire services and a central starting point for tourists who want to spend a holiday ‘on their own terms’ by traveling comfortably in a car equipped with good air-conditioning (during the hot summer days of the Mediterranean) and a modern, reliable GPS system to guide them along their itinerary.

Aside from the wonders of ancient architecture and art in Palermo, whose historic center alone has enough to please the eye of any tourist for a lifetime (Norman, Gothic and Baroque monuments and churches) or its traditional cuisine (try the caponata or pasta alla Norma and you will see), nearby places such as Monreale with its Cathedral and the Capuchin Catacombs overlooking Palermo, or the nearby beaches are good places to visit first.

From there you can reach the popular Agrigento Coast with its sandy beach resorts and where the major archeological treasures are found (the Valley of the Temples has wonderfully preserved Greco-Roman ruins and temples). It is only a 2 hour 15 mins drive from Palermo (123 km). Taormina, with its famous Greek amphitheater, is logically the next stop of your route being only 219 km (2 ½ hr drive) from Agrigento. Sicily is an island after all so the major locations are easily reachable and always within driving distance of each other.
