Although only separated from Sicily by a narrow channel, the Aeolian Islands are markedly different in atmosphere from ‘mainland’ Sicily and, indeed from each other, offering dramatic scenery, spectacularly clear water for diving and swimming, wonderful hiking opportunities and great food and wine, including the honey-sweet Malvasia wine. The seven islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, are all of volcanic origin, which means that black sand beaches, hot mud baths and hissing volcanoes are all part of the attraction.
Whilst all of the islands are inhabited, they retain a sense of being relatively undiscovered at most times, other than during the peak month of August. They are easily accessible via ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo, Palermo, Messina and Naples.
